PV popularity increase
Solar PV installations we are completing are putting smiles on all of our customers' faces. Installation and FiT sign up processes are now very slick, with customers getting up and running to catch what's left of our summer.
We have stock of our top notch, fully accredited equipment for wind, PV and heat pump installations ready and waiting for you!

PV or not PV!
Solar PV installations are now cheaper and more accessible than ever. We are out and about installing systems from remote offgrid battery systems to city centre and suburban houses.
Now the funding has been finalised with the Feed in Tariff (FiT) confirmed, you can be sure your system will save you energy as well as pay for itself in good time. Anything beyond that is money straight into your pocket!
The FiT is not just for solar PV though, and we are also very busy with wind turbine installations.

Funding and Discovery Point Museum
Sadly, now that the feed-in tariff has been confirmed, to compensate for the increased pay back rates the grants for solar PV and wind turbine generators have been withdrawn. But don't be too dissapointed! There is still an interest free loan of £4,000 to be claimed (except new-build projects), payable over 8 years. AND the new tarrif rates are much higher than anticipated, meaning installing a generator is still very worthwhile. See the EST web page for more information on the benefits of feed-in tariffs. We are also working hard with our suppliers to keep our installations at very keen prices!
In other news we have now completed the installation at The Dundee Discovery Point Museum. They now have a Proven 11 (6kW) wind turbine, which is being integrated into their education suite as well as powering the museum's features on the RRS Discovery.

Hard at work!
We have been busy installing PV systems in Fife, Wind Turbines in the Borders and Ground Source Heat Pumps in Perthshire.
The Energy Saving Trust have recently released details of interest free loans now available in Scotland for domestic renewable energy installations for £500-£10,000 which can be paid back over a maximum of 8 years. For more details, see their website or call their Advice Centre on 0800 512 012.
We are also pleased to announce availability of some newly accredited solar PV panels, which will reduce the cost per kW we are able to offer on your system! Give us a call or fill in the enquiry form and we can arrange to get a system up and running for you in time for the introduction of the new feed-in tarifs!
A loan coupled with a cheaper installation cost due to new panels on the market and introduction of feed-in tarifs means that now is a great time to instal a generation system at your property!

Our Customers in the Spotlight
Recently our customers Mr and Mrs Walker made an appearance in the "Largs and Millport Weekly News" in this article about their energy efficient home. They had both a ground source heat pump and a solar PV system installed earlier this year, and have enjoyed both reduced energy bills, and the knowledge that they have considerably reduced their carbon footprint. You can also download the document in an easy to read format in the downloads section of our website.

Smailholm Install
This month Solar and Wind completed an installation in the village of Smailholm in the Scottish Borders. The 2.5kW Proven Energy Wind Turbine has attracted a lot of interest from the residents in and around the village, much to the delight of our customer. The turbine has generated well since installation, producing over the rated 2.5kW in the recently breezy conditions.

Offshore solar PV system installed on National Nature Reserve
Solar & Wind Applications has completed the full renovation of a remote solar photovoltaic system for Scottish Natural Heritage on the Isle of May. This involved system design, supply, transport and commissioning. The existing 32 panels were tested for operational efficiency and relocated to a better site. An additional 16 new panels were also installed to supplement the system and increase its rating to over 6kWp. The existing inverter and batteries were decommissioned, replaced and removed from the island. The new inverter and batteries were commissioned and connected to the PV system and to a new backup generator system.
Green electricity from solar PV will be used to power Scottish Natural Heritage buildings and to charge the battery storage system. It will also power the remote cameras used by the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick, which allow the centre's tourists to control their view of the island's bird life. This will save around 1.2 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared with a diesel generator, and will help prevent possible disturbance to the native wildlife thanks to its silent operation.

Solar PV array installed at Five Star visitor attraction
Solar & Wind Applications has recently installed 5kWp of solar photovoltaics at the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick. Already the winner of a Green Tourism Gold Award, the Seabird Centre is now able to meet a significant portion of its electricity needs with clean, green solar energy. This should allow them to save around 1.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. Solar and Wind Applications has also installed a digital display monitor that allows the centre's visitors to see how much energy the system is generating and how much CO2 has been saved as a result. The system perfectly complements the existing solar powered cameras, parking machines and outdoor lighting.
This installation was carried out with funding from the Low Carbon Buildings Program Phase II, in association with the Low Carbon Partnership.

Award received for East Lothian installation
A Solar & Wind Applications installation has recently been recognised for the positive impact it has had on the local area. Solar & Wind provided a turnkey development project for the installation of a 6kW wind turbine and 12 solar PV panels at the start of the year. This should help our client to save around 4.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The system has since been awarded the HADAS Award for Design by Haddington And District Amenity Society.
Now in its third year, the HADAS Award for Design is an annual award scheme for innovative developments and environmental projects. Nominations are received from the large local membership and judged by the HADAS committee. Our client's system was recognised for its pioneering design as an environmentally sensitive method of sustainable energy production. HADAS hope that this may inspire other similar developments in the future.

Drilling for renewable heat commences in the New Town of Edinburgh
Solar & Wind Applications has been appointed by Lorn Macneal Architects on behalf of their client to design, install and commission one of the first ground source heat pumps into a basement property in the New Town. A single borehole will be drilled to a depth of 100m. The ground loop will then be placed into the borehole and covered. The heat pump will draw heat from the ground and use it to provide heating to the property via underfloor heating, as well as providing hot water. The heat pump is a very efficient form of heating and if run with a green energy tariff, the householder can have a clean, green, low-cost heating system.
A £4,000 grant is available from the Scottish Community and Householder Renewables Initiative to support ground source heat pumps and other renewable technologies.

Wind turbines to be installed in East Ayrshire
In one of the first projects of its type in Scotland, Solar and Wind Applications Ltd has been selected by East Ayrshire Council to install small scale wind turbines to provide clean, green energy. The wind turbines are being installed to raise awareness of renewable energy and climate change issues amongst the local community.
Rod Macneal (Managing Director) commented: “I believe that everyone should be able to experience clean, green energy from renewable sources. In particular, the education of the next generation of energy users is essential. I hope that these wind turbine installations will encourage children to become more aware of sustainable energy generation and their own environmental impact.”
